How to Use a Secondary Barcode

Updated · GearChain Team

Learn how the Secondary Barcode field works and how you can associate an additional barcode or identifier with an inventory item.

A secondary barcode can help a workflow that uses more than one identifier for an item. Keep the purpose of each identifier clear, especially when supplier and internal labels differ.

Steps

  1. Open the relevant form and review its barcode fields.
  2. Add or check the secondary identifier on a sample item.
  3. Use the secondary-barcode workflow demonstrated in the video and scan a test label.
  4. Confirm which item and identifier were saved before making a stock update.
  5. Repeat the test with another item so you can detect a duplicated or incorrectly assigned identifier.

Check the result

Keep identifier formatting consistent, including any leading zeros. Confirm your team knows which barcode to scan for each task.
